Abstract: The principle, application and analysis of Handy Hammer Dynamic Penetration Test as well as the plasticity chart are introduced in this paper. A comparison between the penetration tests and the plastic charts used mostly in developed countries and China is also made in the paper. The results summarize the advantages and convenience of the application of Handy Hammer Dynamic Penetration Test and plasticity chart in the practical projects. Penetration curve obtained from the Handy Hammer Dynamic Penetration Test results shows the general stratification of the soil layers as well as its weakness in the potential geological hazard areas. Samples were collected for the laboratory tests moisture content, unit weight and Atterberg Limits. Plasticity chart obtained from the test results indicates a better indication of both physical and mechanical properties of the soil samples. Along with results from the granularity analysis, a better engineering classification can be obtained. The application of the Handy Hammer Dynamic Penetration Test and the plasticity chart could results in a better understanding of the geological hazards.
