Abstract: Shielded tunneling in the soft soils will induce the disturbance in soil strata, change the original stress conditions as well as break the initial equilibrium state. As a result, the ground surface will settle with various magnitudes. The analysis of the ground surface deformation is important to a safe tunneling construction. This paper presents a case history of a shielded tunneling project underneath a seawall. The ground deformations are monitored and numerically simulated. The maximum observed deformation is 8.8 mm whereas a maximum of 9.2 mm ground settlement is numerically predicted.
