Numerical Simulations of Highway Embankment Reinforced by Geogrids

Abstract: Geogrids have the advantage of high tensile strength and low elongation rate and they are widely used in the highway embankments to improve the pavement performance and reduce the settlement. Both the vertical and horizontal displacements in the embankment before and after the geogrid improvement are evaluated. The results indicate that the geogrid can provide a good limitation measure on both the vertical and horizontal deformations, especially, horizontal displacement. The number of reinforcement layers has limited role of limiting the vertical settlement.
