Evaluation of Pine Timber Piles at the Bottom of Cofferdams

Abstract: The submerged pine timber gains the reputation of “lasting for thousands of years” and it is well suited for the applications of under groundwater conditions that can minimize the deterioration caused by the bacteria attacking. The timber pile also has the advantages of fast construction, simply application and cost effective and it has been used for many years. This paper presents a case of timber pile applying in as the foundation treatment for a cofferdam in a soil improvement project in Nansha, Guangdong province. After timber pile treatment, both the combined modulus and the bearing capacity of the mucky soil within the cofferdam were improved.
