Abstract: Difficulties of determining the bearing capacity of basalt rock and clayey soil alternating deposit strata are frequently encountered in the geotechnical investigations. The stress field in the strong basalt rock overlying the weak clay soil layers will have a stress spreading effect on the underlying weak clayey soil layer and this stress spreading effect can be equivalented to the effect of bearing capacity increase in the clay layer. Correction factors are provided based the engineering experience for the practical engineering application. The empirical bearing capacity values were compared with the finite element analysis results. The comparative results indicated that the empirical relations is conservative and can be safely applied in the geotechnical investigations.
