Abstract: City light rail lines are usually located in the urban area with densely distributed underground and aerial utilities. As a result, the utility relocation work somewhat is a critical factor that impact the light rail construction cost and schedule. If light rail alignment can be optimized to minimize the utility relocation, the construction schedule, the investment cost as well as the disturbance to the adjacent environment will be reduced. This paper presents a case history of underground slurry wall for the standard station of a Metro project. The innovative design and construction methods, such as “optimization of wall segment”, “piecewise lifting” and “piecewise translational lifting”, were used in the project. A 39 meters long deep slurry wall underneath the 110 kV high voltage power line with a net clearance limit of 9.8 meters was successfully constructed within the planned construction schedule. The slurry wall construction was also minimize the utility relocation and was proved as cost effective.
