Abstract:  This paper provides the characteristics of the landslide induced excessive deformation of a railway alignment in Hunan Province. Under the adverse conditions such as intensive precipitation and poor drainage, the infiltration of the groundwater into the thick high montmorillonite content residual clayey soil triggered the deepseated slide. The mitigation design considered the landslide character, factors that trigger the slide and the locally available construction techniques. A gravity retaining structure combined with drainage and water diverting measures was used for the landslide treatment. The result of the construction indicates that the mitigation was successful.
