Abstract: The advanced geological forecast and monitoring measurements of tunnels are indispensable parts of construction for the New Austrian Tunneling Method. These monitoring and measurements can accurately forecast the quality of the rock mass within a certain distance from the tunnel excavation face and provide realtime stability information of the tunnel wall and supporting structures. They can also provide the large deformation warning in the tunnel excavation and ensure the proper excavation procedure can be implemented. The excavation of the shallow buried Shanxi Tunnel is presented in this paper. Both the predicted and monitoring data during the tunnel excavation are analyzed. It is concluded that the deformation rate in the rock mass could be affected by the construction methods. The stresses within the steel supporting structures as well as within the rock mass are correlated with the deformation rate at the excavated surface in the shallow buried tunnel.
