Abstract: Load transfer function method is widely used in the settlement prediction of pile foundations. It is a simple and practical method first proposed by Seed and Reese in 1957. The key aspects in the pile settlement prediction are to select an appropriate function and determine the parameters. A large quantity of research and testing are available.  It is suggested that the hyperbolic functions can better fit the nonlinear relationship between the pile and the surrounding soil. This article reviews the development of the shaft load transfer functions and its applications. The different expressions of the load transfer function under various constitutive models. The pile settlement is obtained through iterations by considering the deformation compatibility.
