Abstract: This paper presents a case study of a deep excavation project in Shenzhen. The excavation process is simulated with threedimensional finite element analysis. The deformation characteristics of the foundation soil, supporting structures as well as the adjacent excavated pit under complex conditions are analysed and compared with the actual monitored values. The results indicate that the deformation increases with the depth of the dimension increase of the newly excavated pit. Therefore, the dimension change at each excavation stage should not be too large in order to induce the excessive deformation of the adjacent buildings. Near the excavated pit side, the deformation is relatively small due to the relatively low earth pressure changes. The comparison between the predicted deformation and the observed deformation values indicates that the numerical analysis is appropriate.
