Abstract: The engineering developments in the nearshore Dalian area indicate that the karst conditions of nearshore area consist of rock pinnacles and fissure like cavities with the dipping in the vertical directions. The tectonic folding and alternating of mudstone are the main contributions to the karst rock characteristics. In the rocksocketed pile design practice, appropriate thickness above the karst cavern with different dimensions is critical to the safety. Gravity foundations require adequate cushion thickness and the rock pinnacles should be removed to minimize the stress concentration. Soft soils in the rock pinnacles need to be removed and appropriate compaction is necessary for the foundation construction.
