Abstract: The dynamic compaction has the advantages of the simple equipment, straight forward in soil improvement principals, short construction period and cos effective. As a result, it has been widely used in the soil improvement projects in loess area. The loess deposits at the edge of the Loess Plateau in northern China are not typical from their formations. They have the characteristics of low moisture and high sandy contents, nonhomogeneous and containing cohesive soil lenses in some areas so that they might not be applicable for the dynamic compaction in accordance with the code requirements. The feasibility of the application of dynamic compaction in this nontypical loess soil formation based on the test data from a case history.
