Abstract: This paper presents a case study of mitigating a collapsed tunnel. At the collapsed area, the open excavation and unloading were first performed followed immediately by the installation of the tunnel liner. When the reconstructed tunnel was past the distressed area, the original tunneling method could be resumed. The paper also analyzes the possible factors that could contribute the collapse. In addition to the adverse subsurface conditions, the safety alert level among the construction personnel may also be the problem.
