Abstract: A clear understanding of the instability and movement characteristics of landslides is essential for predicting hazard consequences and formulating effective mitigation strategies. This study examines the Liangshui Village landslide in Zhenxiong County, Yunnan Province, and employs the discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method to numerically simulate its failure-movement process. By integrating simulation results with monitored velocity and displacement variations, the staged kinematic behavior of the landslide is systematically analyzed. The results show that the instability process can be divided into four stages: initiation, acceleration, deceleration-deposition, and stabilization. The movement is characterized by pronounced accumulation of displaced material on the gentle platform at the slope toe. The dynamic evolution of the landslide is jointly controlled by topographic conditions and rock-mass properties: elevation differences and slope gradients govern kinetic energy transformation, while weak interlayers and joint-fissure structures accelerate failure and disintegration of the sliding mass. The findings indicate that, when considering variations in terrain and material composition, different types of landslides may exhibit markedly distinct instability-movement characteristics.
