Abstract: A finite element analysis with the shear strength reduction method and the limit equilibrium methods are used to study the integral stability of a high slope of a slag yard after the mitigation. A three-dimensional FEM model of the high slope is established based on the previous research results. The stability of the slope is analyzed by using the shear strength reduction finite element method to obtain the slope stability factor of safety and the potential sliding-plane. The stability of the slope is also analyzed by using the limit equilibrium method to obtain the factor of safety. The results show that the factor of safety for the slope stability by the shear strength reduction method is 1.25 and it is within the range of those by limit equilibrium method. The high slope of the slag yard after the mitigation is stable. The study in this paper can serve as a reference for the similar engineering projects.
