Abstract: The degree of compaction testing is critical for both the roadway subgrade and the factory backfills since the stability of the foundation soils has a significant impact on the superstructure. The compactness is closely related to the maximum dry density, the wet density and the moisture content of backfill materials, among which the wet density and moisture content are obtained based on the on-site sampling. For moisture content determination of backfill materials, oven dry method is commonly used in China, and the rapid moisture content determination method is usually allowed abroad. Both two methods can determine the moisture content of backfill materials, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. This paper analyzes and compares the test results of both methods.
