Abstract: Adverse deformation and damage at the existing highway bridge piers were observed, and it was concluded that these deformations were induced by the adjacent construction. These excessive deformations and damages might affect the safe operation of the highway and even result in serious traffic accident. The damages on the bridge piers were numerically analyzed by commercial software FLAC3D. The stress and strain fields of the piers were evaluated, and the construction monitoring program was established from the numerical analysis results. Based on the monitoring results, bridge management decision could therefore be made.
