Abstract:  A numerical model was set up to simulate vertical piles for slope stability using FLAC3D. The effectiveness of the vertical piles to stabilize slope failure was assessed by deformation, stress, and plastic zone distribution. The simulation indicates that compressive stress is generally developed in the slope with principal stress generally parallel to the slope which results in driving force. The inclusion of vertical piles in the slope alters the stress condition and improves slope stability. Generally connected plastic zones are mainly the result of shear failure right above the soilrock interface. Vertical piles socketed in rock improve the slope stability by interrupting the connectivity of the plastic zones.
