Abstract: This paper presents the results of determination of the internal friction angle of the rock mass based on the project experience and the design code requirements. The cohesion of the rock mass is back analyzed by using the MohrCoulomb criterion under uniaxial stress. The design parameters of the rock mass are used in the soil nailing wall supporting design. The hollow soil nails' penetration depth is correlated with the blow counts of the Standard Penetration Test. This empirical relationship provides a reference value for the design of the required length for the hollow soil nails. The paper also presents the engineering considerations for the soil nail applications in the cold regions that are affected by the freeze expansions.
