Abstract: Currently, there are few construction experience and design procedures for the large scale manmade hills on soft soils. This paper presents a case history of a manmade hill project in Wangjiadun Theme Park. The soil improvement design as well as the manmade hill construction is introduced in details. A geotechnical instrumentation program was implemented during the construction.  The vertical and lateral deformation of the ground surface, lateral deflection at various soil depths, excessive pore water pressure, total soil stress as well as the groundwater surface are monitored. The results indicated that the sand/gravel drains plus dynamic compaction and surcharge method receives a satisfactory result. The results also show that large lateral deformations are recorded at the intersection area of two hills. A stress concentration zone is observed at depth of 8 meters below the hill.
