Abstract: This paper presents a case history of the basement improvement design for a High-Raised Building: International Trade Center in Wuhan. The owner, Wuhan Hanpeng Real Estate Development Co., contacted the Soils and Foundations Committee of Hubei Society of Civil Engineers in 1993. The targeted tasks were: 1) Reduce the thickness of the foundation slab; 2) Raise the bottom of foundation slab elevation; and 3) optimize the other structural elements in the basement design to facilitate the safety, to reduce the cost and for the ease of the construction. The Soils and Foundations Committee fulfilled the requirement of the owner.
