Abstract: The Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) is a conventional and effective ground improvement method for thick soft cohesive soils, but the anchoring failures are frequently encountered during the PVD installations. These anchoring failures affect the quality of the construction and will increase the cost if several PVDs are inserted adjacent to the failed one. This paper presents a case history of PVD installations in Zhuhai Cross Gate No. 6 bid package project. The anchoring failure during the installation was analyzed and improving method was proposed and the improved procedure effectively reduced the anchoring failure rate.
