Abstract: The vertical shaft is an important component in the construction of the underground pedestrian pass in urban areas and its safe installation is essential to the success of the underpass construction. The construction of the underground pass at Wusheng Road East in Wuhan utilized the ground anchors with shotcrete as the vertical support measure. The steady seepage at the shaft walls and a sudden ground subsidence were encountered during the construction. The local grouting and other seepage stoppage measures were used based on the construction monitoring data on the extensometers and surface settlement points. The results indicate that the mitigation measures are appropriate. The construction monitoring can provide a viable and reliable feedback of the construction, and is a vital measure to a safe construction of underground pedestrian pass.
