Preservation Measures for Geological Relics--A Preliminary Evaluation Based on Engineering Practices on Jimo Mashan Stone Forest

Abstract: The Mashan region of the City of Jimo contains a variety of geological relics, such as columnar jointed rock masses, petrified wood fossils, and contactolites, etc. There are pressing needs for the preservation of these unique geological features. In order to achieve a desirable overall result, the effectiveness of each individual method is worth investigating. This paper presented a number of proposed preservation measures for Mashan stone forest and petrified wood fossils, including removal of unstable rocks, rock slope resurface, winderosion treatment for rocks and fossiles, site drainage improvement, construction of inspection channels, installation of security fences and live monitoring network systems, etc. Additionally, exhibition halls for otherwise abandoned petrified wood were invested. The actual implementation of each of these measures verified its engineering feasibility and effectiveness.
