Abstract: Using the crushed stone as a sliding isolation material for rural lowrise buildings has a research significance. The inhouse made large simple shear device is used for the studies of frictional behavior between single crushed stone grain and the concrete slab. The horizontal shear sliding tests are performed with various grain sizes and vertical loads. The results indicate that, similar frictional performance can be found between crushed stone with various grain sizes and the concrete slab. The frictional resistance increases and reaches a stable level after a threshold displacement values is reached. The frictional resistance increases with the vertical load for stone various grain sizes. The coefficients of friction for crushed stone with different grain size vary in a certain range. Compared with small and large grains, the medium grain crushed stone has a smallest coefficient of friction and is a potential suitable cushion material for the seismic isolation purposes.
