Abstract: This paper presents a case history of the design and construction aspects of a high retaining structure in Guangming District, Shenzhen. The slope stability problems before and after the mitigations are discussed with engineering analog, theoretical approach and numerical analysis approaches. The slope stability mitigation recommendations are proposed and the construction monitoring program and criteria are also presented. The results indicate that, the optimum retaining structure is selected from the various feasible retaining walls. After the design and construction, the monitoring data indicate that the slelected wall type is safe and stable. The completed structure is also stable.
