Abstract: The selection of pile/column types is critical to the project cost control. The physical and mechanical properties of the shallowly deposited Quaternary soils in Suzhou area are statistically analyzed. The properties of the bearing strata that are potentially suitable for the ramcompacted columns with enlarged base are summarized. A cost comparisons of the ramcompacted columns with enlarged base is provided for the various practical projects. It is concluded that the application of the ramcompacted columns with enlarged base in the Suzhou area is feasible.
